Education

The IBCLC  exam prep course for 2012 will start in December 2011.

The course is being facilitated by Nicola OByrne IBCLC RGN RCN, and Lorraine O’Hagan IBCLC RM RGN BSC hons midwifery.

*2012 IBCLC  exam requirements are changing .* Candidates  ( health professionals) now require at least 90 specific lactation education hours in the previuos 5 years and 1000 clinical breastfeeding hours.  Non healthcare professionals must have  extra medical courses completed.

Course Format :
We follow the IBCLE exam blueprint and all lectures are complimented with notes and references for further reading. Cerps are also provided .

Anatomy and physiology of the breast.
Biochemistry of breastmilk.
Communication and counselling skills.
Pharmacology and Medications.
Maternal Illness.
Breast pathology.
When the Infant is Premature, Ill or Injured.
Suck Problems.
Normal growth and development.
Developmental milestones in the infant and toddler.
Breastfeeding equipment and their appropriate uses.
Nutrition for the Breastfeeding mother, teenager, vegetarian and vegan.
Milk banking, induced lactation, relactation.
Breastfeeding beyond the cultural norm, Weaning.
Maternal Employment issues and strategies
Research and interpretation of same
Ethics and the IBCLC, scope of practice.
International Code of marketing breastmilk substitutes.
Exam studying tips, exam strategies.
Sample exam questions each day.
Mock exam on day 5.
