About

Hello, I’m Nicola O’Byrne, Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), neonatal/paediatric nurse and mother of five. I provide practical help and advice with breastfeeding concerns, immediately after birth or at any stage. I offer my service at your home in South Dublin or if you are outside this area, at Evie Suite 36, Beacon Hall, Sandyford  or my home office.

It can sometimes  be a very anxious time for new parents, getting breastfeeding established, sometimes all that’s needed is a few small changes and lots of encouragement!. Other times professional lactation help is essential and saves a breastfeeding relationship with mother and baby.

I have been working with mothers and babies for over 30 years. As a  paediatric nurse, I worked in the neonatal unit of  the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital and Crumlin Childrens Hospital. During this time, I helped many mothers to establish effective breastfeeding with both fullterm and preterm babies.

After the birth of my first child , I trained as a breastfeeding counsellor with Cuidiu – Irish Childbirth Trust and  hosted breastfeeding support mornings and provided individual counselling to breastfeeding mothers. I became an IBCLC in 2005 and now I teach parents-to-be about breastfeeding before they have their babies, and provide one-on-one support afterwards.   I am part of the team at the tongue tie service in Blackrock Clinic. I also prepare candidates for the IBCLC exam every year by organising seminars and workshops.

Being a mum of 5 children, has also taught me lots about breastfeeding,  I believe it’s not just about the  benefits of breastmilk but also an easy  way of mothering and nurturing your child.

I am an inclusive practice. To find out more about what this means, my colleague Diana West IBCLC explains on her site.
