About me

Hello, I’m Nicola O’Byrne, Lactation Consultant (I.B.C.L.C), neonatal/paediatric nurse and mother of five. I provide practical help and advice with breastfeeding concerns in your own home, immediately after birth or at any stage. It can be a very anxious time for new parents getting breastfeeding established, sometimes all that’s needed is a few small changes and lots of encouragement!.

I have been working with mothers and babies for over 20 years. As a nurse I worked in the neonatal unit of  the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital. During this time, I helped lots of mothers to establish effective breastfeeding with both fullterm and preterm babies. After the birth of my first child , I trained as a breastfeeding counsellor with Cuidiu – Irish Childbirth Trust and have hosted breastfeeding support mornings and provided individual counselling to breastfeeding mothers. I became an IBCLC in 2005 and now I teach mums-to-be about breastfeeding before they have their babies, and provide one-on-one support afterwards.  I also teach the 20 hour WHO/Unicef breastfeeding course to health professionals and prepare candidates for the IBCLC exam every year. In 2011 I also  became the expert breastfeeding advisor on Eumom – an online parenting site in Ireland.

Being a mum of 5 children, has also taught me lots about breastfeeding,  I believe it’s not just about the  benefits of milk but also a lovely  way of mothering and nurturing your child.
